Las Vegas announcement imminent?

NEWS STORY
29/01/2022

It's understood that a deal which would see Las Vegas host of the world championship from 2023 is "as good as done".

The Sports Business Journal reports that officials have visited the city several times in recent months and that a deal - thereby giving the United States three races - is imminent.

However, Pitpass can go one better, we have heard that the deal is "as good as done", furthermore, the track layout would include a section of the legendary Strip.

Also, in a canny move by F1 bosses, a number of the city's casinos are to contribute to the hosting fee, though one is still understood to be holding out.

For as long as anyone can remember there has been talk of a return to Las Vegas, which hosted two Grands Prix in the early 80s. However, the events were held on a temporary track in the car park of Caesars Palace hotel, which pretty much tells you all you need to know.

Since Liberty Media gained control of the sport there has been a marked drive to increase the sport's popularity in the US, and with the advent of the Miami Grand Prix, not to mention Netflix and Drive to Survive, the dream is being realised.

Speaking over the United States Grand Prix weekend last year, COTA boss, Bobby Epstein welcomed the idea of further races in the US, and dismissed claims that an additional race might dilute interest while also threatening the Austin event.

"We're already paired with Mexico City," he said. "We're a lot closer to Mexico City than Vegas would be to Miami. So I think if Vegas and Miami came in May and Mexico City and Austin come in the fall, that could be a great complement in helping it grow."

"Las Vegas! Please NO not again! I know Money Talks, But not the Caesar's Palace parking lots again. Wasn't 1981-1984 enough??? For the younger F1 fans, please Google it, not kidding the parking lots."

"@ Defiant

We don't do guessing here... and if we did we'd make it clear.

As we said in the article, a number of casinos are pitching in, however one is holding out and in many ways it is key.

Can't tell you which one but back in the day when it had a record label, among other things, said label was host to the first three albums from The Velvet Underground.

Please note... there is no need to name that label/casino in any responses."

"@ Defiant...Yes, LV is tacky, there's no other word for it. The city is there for only two reasons, gambling and lights. Ever noticed that the casino's gambling floors actually have no windows, are maintained at specific temperature and have no clocks? The effect is to keep people gambling without any others senses intruding and thus breaking the sequences of the gambling activities.

The biggest inequity will be why go there when the entire city is massively overlit and the FIA have their green credentials to defend? Yes power supply comes from a mix but why waste it anyway?"

"@Editor, yes I read that, but I was hoping it was just a guess and not an absolute, or that maybe they'd dig up one of the geriatric olympics (golf) course's and it would only have a tiny bit of the strip included."

Re your hope that it's not another street track...

Well if part of The Strip is being used - and that's the plan, hence casinos putting up a share of the hosting fee - it will have to be a street track."

"@kenji, ive been to LV twice and you're correct. Its an over priced over hyped dive. I went on business the first time and "errrr indoors" was disappointed that she didn't get to go, so I took her. The hotels are impressive, as is the nearby Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon, otherwise I'll be quite content if I never return.
My point about the track I stand by, I get so bored of street circuits and I hope it's not another one of them to have the twinkly lights in the background, but I fear it is.
@Spindoctor, you do make a good point about hastily built tracks on a budget.... maybe LV is just a disaster waiting to happen either way."

"This doesn't bode well. COTA quickly became a disaster area of lumps, bumps & dodgy surfaces possibly due to what Zappa called "cheepnis" in its design & construction. Even the MotoGP riders couldn't find a decent line that avoided them. I know they're now "resurfacing" some parts, and the proof of that pud will be in the eating.
I fear that anything cobbled[sic] together at Las Vegas is unlikely to be much better...."

"I have said it here before but Liberty are intent on making F1 a single-seater version of NASCAR: "if they can do 36 races in a season, then why can't F1?" must be their intended argument. Oh, and are the Las Vegas owners still the M.. err "Make you an offer you can't refuse" types?"

"@Defiant...I have been to LV many times, once a year for around 8 years or so and apart from the very first time I couldn't stand the place. Plastic and tacky and the food was always rubbish! A one off street race at night would be fine but anything more? No thanks but whatever is decided I will always watch...irrespective of the location. F1 is F1 after all."

"I really hope this will only be the case if they plan on building a complete new full size circuit. We really don't need some half ****d part time street circuit. We already have too many of them on the calendar."
