BIOGRAPHY

Built in just under a year by at a cost of around $58m, the Losail circuit opened in 2004.

The track is 5.380 km (3.343 miles) in length, with a main straight of just over a kilometre at 1,068 metres.

It is surrounded by artificial grass to stop the sand encroaching on the track.

In 2007, Losail added permanent outdoor lighting for night races. At the time, Losail was the largest permanent venue sports lighting project in the world, a distinction that now belongs to another the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.

The first night race in MotoGP history was the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar in March 2008.

In February 2009, a GP2 Asia Series night time race took place. The qualifying lap record was achieved by Nico Hulkenberg in 1:35.741.

WSBK visited Losail in the periods of 2005-2009 and 2014-2019; and the WTCC visited there between 2015-2017.

On 30 September 2021 it was announced that the circuit would hold the 20th round of the Formula One season by hosting the inaugural edition for the Qatar Grand Prix with a 10-year deal agreed from 2023.
