NEWS STORY
12/01/2024

Each year, motorsports enthusiasts are absolutely captivated by the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix. Held at the iconic Melbourne Grand Prix, the event acts as a proper curtain-raiser for the F1 season.

It gathers top-tier teams and drivers, putting cutting-edge technology in the service of a thrilling spectacle of speed and precision. Last year's Grand Prix, laden with chaos and crashes, saw a record attendance; over 400,000 enthusiasts came to enjoy the exciting, volatile races. In many ways, the risk and unpredictability associated with the races is reminiscent of casino games, although the casinos over at aussielowdepositcasino.com make the risk more palatable by offering instant payouts. Fans of races and speed: read on to find out more about the high-octane championship and its records.

Qualifying Rules and Formats

The F1 qualifying format is made up of three qualifying sessions, during which the drivers aim to complete the lap as fast as possible:

F1 Qualifying Q1

All drivers are allowed to participate in the 18-minute first session. Their aim is to set a fast lap, in order to qualify for the Q2. The five slowest drivers are eliminated, while the remaining 15 move on to the next session.

F1 Qualifying Q2

The next session is 15 minutes long, and again, the goal is to set a fast lap. The 15 drivers that made it to Q2 compete against one another. Same as in Q1, 5 drivers are eliminated, and the remaining 10 advance further.

F1 Qualifying Q3

The final session is only 12 minutes and the 10 finalists strive to set a fast lap, which will determine their starting position in the race. The fastest driver from the Q3 starts from the pole position, while the remaining drivers line up behind him in descending order, depending on their lap time.

Tyre Rules

Before 2022, it was mandatory for the top ten drivers to start on the tyres they used in their fastest lap of Q2. This often meant that it was more beneficial to start in a lower position. Nowadays, the rule no longer applies and the teams can freely choose their tyres.

The 2023 Grand Prix was filled with excitement at every turn - quite literally.

Max Verstappen

First in Q1, second in Q2, and first again in 3 - if you need a driver to bet on, Verstappen is your guy. This was the 22nd pole position of his career and his very first in Melbourne. He set a time of 1m 17.723, putting him ahead of Russel, who came in second in Q3.

Fernando Alonso

Though the rains hit during Q2, that didn't stop Alonso from completing a lap of 1 minute and 18.887 seconds, half a second less than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. He finished fourth.

George Russell

Mercedes' driver qualified second, only 0.236s away from Verstappen. He said he was ''disappointed'' for not getting the pole position. His teammate, Lewis Hamilton, came in third ahead of Alonso.

Sergio Perez

Unlike his Red Bull teammate, Perez was not so lucky. In one of the more nerve-wracking moments of the event, the driver crashed in Q1, earning a red flag and qualifying dead last for the actual race.

Conclusion

For fans of motorsports, the Australia Grand Prix presents a fitting prelude to a season of excitement and adrenaline. F1 is not a mere motorsports event - it's been recognized as an important contributor to the host countries' economies. The 2021 Australia Grand Prix was one for the books on account of the records broken and races gone awry. One thing's for sure, it's not for those faint of heart.
