Verstappen has little interest in F1 history

Talking to Dutch TV broadcaster Ziggo Sport, Max Verstappen has admitted that he has little interest in the history of the sport, revealing that historic F1 cars do little for him.

"I do know a bit about it, but my knowledge doesn't stretch that far back," he tells sports journalist Wilfried de Jong.

"I know the names, but the really old cars don't really have my interest," he continued. "I'd never really have the urge to drive those cars; they're just too old, too slow. Although anything driven on the limit is challenging, it just doesn't do it for me.

"Guys like Sebastian Vettel love the old cars and bikes," he added. "I'm more modern."

Fact is, if Max sat at the wheel of one of those glorious machines from the 60s, for example, and drove it on the limit devoid of the myriad of aids and devices he takes for granted on his current machine and which give grip his predecessors could only fantasise about, he would find a new respect not only for the cars but the men that drove them.

Perhaps he and some his colleagues might take advantage of the fact that the Masters Historic Formula One series is part of the support programme for the British Grand Prix in July.

"Which just proves why he has no respect for his elders on the track or off. "

"The history he should forget is of Jos Werestopping. Several years ago when I was an official for a world wide karting event I met Maximus and he was already an arrogant stuck-up young dipstick. I also met Michael Schumacher (who I had never liked from what I saw on TV) and he was charming, warm, and gracious. So, the one who had really done it all was entirely the opposite of the punk."

"I'm sure he realises how hard they are to drive, but is just disinterested in them. Some people just aren't that interested in history.

I'm sure he could figure a gear stick and clutch out quickly though."

"I remeber a time when Michael Shomacher was asked to drive one of the old Ferrari F1 cars that Villeneuve drove....He declined as he thought they were too dangerous....They also had a gearstick, something that Max has never heard of....also they had three pedals....he must find them slow, but most of all confusing....poor boy!"

"Oh the voices of the young. He would most likely find them hard ro drive and keep looking for the push buttons to change the feel. No seat of the pants."
