McLaren fined €30,000

NEWS STORY

McLaren has been fined following an issue with the CDS system on Lando Norris' car which caused FP2 to be red-flagged.

The stewards heard from the Woking team's Sporting Director and Technical Director Applied Engineering, the FIA Single Seater Sporting Director, FIA Technical Delegate, FIA Electronic Engineer and FIA electric and Hybrid Powertrain Engineer.

McLaren admitted that for aerodynamic purposes it had placed transparent tape over the button that is required to be pressed to activate the CDS (Clutch Disengagement System). This, in the opinion of the FIA representatives and admitted by the team, completely defeated the purpose of the system, which is designed to be activated quickly by a marshal wearing protective gloves.

The team conceded that it was not possible to break the tape and press the button by hand without the use of a tool. As a result, following the issue which caused Norris to stop at the Nouvelle Chicane, the car could not be pushed to safety and the session had to be stopped.

Fining McLaren €30,000, €10,000 of which is suspended for a period of 12 months subject to no further breaches of this regulation, the stewards determined to suspend a lower amount of the penalty compared to a breach of this same regulation at the previous event, because that breach, and the subsequent penalty, should have alerted all teams to the importance of the CDS system.

In Canada, Racing Bulls were been fined after the CDS on Liam Lawson's stranded car failed to work. In that case, a ruptured joint caused a hydraulic leak, which caused the car to stop. The CDS, when activated by the marshal, then failed to release the clutch and hence the car could not be moved.

The Faenza outfit was fined €30,000, €20,000 of which is suspended for a period of 12 months.

"So the FIA brings us this wonderful 50:50 engine split that's completely eroded the driving challenge, and now they're slacking off on safety too...unacceptable. Mclaren should have had the book thrown at them."
