Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix: Qualifying team notes - Ferrari

Qualifying for the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix produced mixed emotions for Scuderia Ferrari HP.

On the one hand, there was satisfaction with one of the team's most competitive performances of the season, the two SF-26s consistently fighting at the front and Lewis Hamilton securing a place on the front row. On the other hand, things did not go well for Charles Leclerc, whose session ended prematurely following an crash, leaving him tenth on the grid for tomorrow's race, which gets underway at 15:00 CEST over 66 laps (307.236 kilometres).

On a hot day - 31°C ambient and 51°C track - which contributed to particularly high tyre degradation, each set of Soft tyres was effectively good for just one flying lap, adding a further layer of complexity to the session. Lewis and Charles progressed comfortably through the first two phases of qualifying, confirming the strong level of competitiveness shown since the start of the weekend. In Q3, however, their fortunes took different paths. On his first run, Leclerc lost control of the car at Turn 4 and hit the barriers, bringing out a red flag that stopped the session. When qualifying resumed, Hamilton first completed a lap on the tyres he had been using at the time of the interruption before fitting a fresh set of Softs for the final run. The Briton extracted the full potential from his SF-26 and, as the last driver to cross the line, stopped the clocks at 1'14"743, the second-fastest time, just 64 thousandths of a second off pole.

Tomorrow's Grand Prix promises to be demanding both physically and strategically. The conditions seen so far this weekend suggest that tyre management will play a decisive role and that a variety of strategies could come into play over the course of the 66 laps.

Lewis Hamilton: I'm really pleased with today's result. Starting on the front row in Barcelona is a great outcome, especially after a difficult start to the weekend. I wasn't fully comfortable with the balance and struggled to get the tyres in the right window, even this morning, I didn't have the feeling in the car I wanted. After FP3 we made some changes, reset, and took a step forward when it mattered. From Q1 onwards I found the confidence to put the laps together. The team did a great job and the upgrades are working as intended, so a big thank you to everyone in Maranello. There's still a race to run and it won't be easy, but I'll give everything. Hopefully we can fight the Mercedes and stay at the front. I love this circuit and I'm excited to see what we can do.

Charles Leclerc: I tried to carry some more speed into Turn 4, but then I went onto the dirty side of the track and lost the rear. There's not much more to say, it was a driving error.

I think we can do well tomorrow. The upgrade was a good step forward and I will push to make up as many positions as possible and bring home a positive result for the team.

Fred Vasseur: After this qualifying, we have mixed feelings in the garage. There are definitely some positives: there was a huge push from everyone to bring this major upgrade package to Barcelona. It is paying off as the pace is clearly there which is an important factor. Of course we are disappointed for Charles as we could have secured a much better team outcome. He felt he had what he needed to take pole and he had been on the pace in all the sessions. He just pushed a little too hard. But it is what it is, and tomorrow's race will be a long one and with the likelihood of tyre degradation being a factor, Charles can fight back. As for Lewis, he has been getting stronger all season and he arrived here in Barcelona with a lot of confidence. He knew we had the updates and he built up his pace over all the sessions. Tomorrow in the race we can play our cards to bring home a strong team result.
