Ranking the Most Famous Home Grand Prix Wins

NEWS STORY
31/10/2023

There's something captivating about a driver returning to their home soil to compete in their domestic Grand Prix - the hype, the expectation, the anticipation, and the glory.

Of course, it doesn't always go to plan, as Sergio Perez found out in his Turn 1 exit at the Mexico GP in front of his adoring home crowd in October.

But for others, returning home has been the scene of their crowning moments in F1 - here's a look back at some of the most famous homecoming kings in Formula One history.

Hamilton Soars at Silverstone

The good news for Perez is that he can still finish second in the Drivers' Championship, albeit with Lewis Hamilton chipping away at his lead. Bookmakers like Paddy Power are offering a 'without Max Verstappen' betting market, with the Mexican the 8/15 favourite and the Brit just behind at 5/4.

Many sports predictions columns will expect Perez to seal the deal at the Brazilian GP, and while this is not quite on home soil, he will certainly enjoy plenty of support from the South American crowd.

Hamilton, of course, is no stranger to home glory himself, with Silverstone becoming almost ubiquitous for silver domination as his Mercedes thundered to seven wins at the track in the space of just eight years.

But his most iconic victory at Silverstone, arguably, came as a relative rookie with McLaren back in 2008. Barely two seasons into his F1 career, Hamilton was beginning to make a name for himself as the British Grand Prix rolled around on a rainy weekend in Northamptonshire.

In treacherous racing conditions, Hamilton climbed from fourth on the grid to first with a show of outstanding driving, laced with composure and - dare we say - a hint of risk-taking abandon. That's what a home GP will do to a driver.

In the end, the result wasn't in doubt - Hamilton landed the first of what would be eight wins (and counting) at the track; making him the most successful driver in Silverstone's storied history.

Schumacher Takes Advantage

German racing fans longed for a home winner. They'd seen Austrians, Belgians and Swiss take victory at Hockenheim and the Nürburgring, but never a home driver.

Step forward the man that would become the greatest German motor racer of all time: Michael Schumacher.

He'd take to F1 like a duck to water upon his debut in 1992; just two years later, he was world champion. So anticipation at Hockenheim was at fever pitch as Schumacher returned in 1995.

Damon Hill was on pole and travelling well early on, but a coming-together with a tyre barrier left Hill out of the race… although, mercifully, unhurt.

The door was ajar for Schumacher and he took full advantage, racing so well that Benetton could afford two pit stops as opposed to one. Ironically, his car broke down not long after passing the chequered flag, but the German faithful didn't care - they finally had a home hero to savour.

A Double-Win for Farina

We've cast our mind back and devoured the history books, but can only find one instance where a driver clinched the title on home soil.

That honour goes to Giuseppe Farina, whose place in the annals of F1 is secure given his status as the sport's inaugural world champion in 1950.

The ultimate glory would come at Monza, with Farina usurping the previous points leader - Juan Manuel Fangio - after the Argentine's Alfa Romeo hit the skids.

What a moment for Farina and the Italian crowd: the first of many memorable home GP wins that would follow.
