French Grand Prix Trivia Quiz

By Geoff Collins

So, How much do you know about the French GP?

1. The French GP has been around since the World Championship started in 1950. In those days, drivers were allowed to swap cars if they had mechanical (or other) problems. So how many drivers were classified in the first six positions of that inaugural French GP?
7
8
9

2. The 1957 GP at Rouen-les-Essarts is best remembered for a classic shot of Fangio drifting his Maserati 250F. Which of these three drivers made their F1 debut in this race only to be killed a few days later in a Formula 2 race at Reims?
Carlos Menditeguy
Herbert Mackay-Fraser
Michael MacDowel

3. The 1961 race is unique in F1 history in that it is the only World Championship race to be won by a driver making their debut (although I'd maintain that there is a case for Farina at Silverstone in 1950 too). Giancarlo Baghetti, driving a Federazione Italiana Scuderie Automobilische Ferrari 156, dived out of Dan Gurney's slipstream 200 metres before the line to finish 0.1 seconds ahead of the American's Porsche. Jo Bonnier was Dan's team mate that day, and although he completed the full race distance, he was a fair way back. How far behind Baghetti did Jo finish?
3m 15.4s
3m 45.4s
4m 15.4s

4. The 1967 race was held on the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans in front of a paltry 20,000 spectators. Who drove a privateer BRM to fifth despite suffering an engine failure in the closing stages?
Bob Anderson
Chris Irwin
Mike Spence

5. Who came second in the 1970 event?
Chris Amon
Jack Brabham
Jochen Rindt

6. How many wheels did the first three finishers of the 1976 race have between them?
12
14
16

7. Back in 1980, there were more cars entered than spaces on the grid. Neither of the two Shadows qualified - who was lucky enough NOT to have been entered in one of the unwieldy DN11s?
Stefan Johansson
David Kennedy
Geoff Lees

8. In 1986 the first four places were split between Williams and McLaren. Another team got both its cars in the points, but is no longer around in F1. Was it?
Arrows
Brabham
Ligier

9. In 1990 Ivan Capelli nearly pulled off a miracle and lead for much of the race. His Judd powered Leyton House (née March) was only passed by Alain Prost four laps from the end, but second was still pretty good. Who finished third?
Berger
Piquet
Senna

10. Launch control wasn't allowed in 1994 but despite that (!) Schumacher made a fantastic start, passing Mansell and Hill and going on to win in his Benetton Ford. Cosworth, like today, were the engine of choice for the non works teams, supplying Larousse, Footwork, Simtek and Minardi. Which of these Cosworth powered drivers picked up two points in that race?
Jean-Marc Gounon
Pierluigi Martini
Gianni Morbidelli

11. In 1997 Williams and Ferrari took the first four places while McLaren struggled. Mika retired, where did DC finish?
7th
8th
9th

12. How many corners at Magny Cours are named after venues where World Championship events have been held?
4
5
6

13. In 1999 Ferrari's team orders kicked in allowing Schuey to get past Irvine for fifth in the closing stages. But which team took both pole position and a place on the podium?
Jordan
McLaren
Stewart

14. In 2001, who allegedly had a problem with their radio that prevented them from hearing an order to let his team-mate past?
Rubens Barrichello
Nick Heidfeld
Ralf Schumacher

Eddie Irvine
Allan McNish
Mark Webber
