Albon recovering following respiratory failure

NEWS STORY
15/09/2022

Williams has revealed that Alex Albon suffered respiratory failure following his surgery on Saturday but is now making excellent progress.

Today's update from Williams reads as follows:

"Further to Alex Albon's diagnosis of appendicitis on the morning of Saturday 10 September, he was admitted to San Gerardo hospital for treatment. He underwent a successful laparoscopic surgery on Saturday lunchtime.

Following surgery, Alex suffered with unexpected post-operative anaesthetic complications which led to respiratory failure, a known but uncommon complication. He was re-intubated and transferred to intensive care for support.

He made excellent progress overnight and was able to be removed from mechanical ventilation yesterday morning. He has now been transferred to a general ward and is expected to return home tomorrow. There were no other complications.

Alex's full focus is on recovery and preparation ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix later this month.

Alex would like to thank the excellent care and support he has received, including from the nursing, anaesthetic and ICU teams at Osperdale San Gerardo - ASST Monza, the FIA medical team, his Performance Coach, Patrick Harding, the Williams Racing team and Dr Luke Bennett from HINTSA Performance."

On behalf of its readers, Pitpass wishes Alex a speedy recovery.

"Respiratory failure is an extremely serious complication and I would expect that he will be monitored closely before returning to the grid. The fact that he was quickly taken off machine assisted breathing augurs well and I very much doubt that he would've been released so quickly if there were fears of an imminent relapse. Hopefully he'll be back in action soon as he's a very likeable young man. He is a very fast driver who would've been further advanced were it not for a few incidents beyond his control whilst driving for RB. "

"Put in perspective, Albon improves from P11 in FP1 and finishes P10 in FP2 before being rushed to hospital... while Latifi's laptimes are... well....

Then De Vries literally hops in Saturday, hasn't driven the Williams, struggles/isn't comfortable in Albon's(?) seat and also outpaces/outqualifies Latifi... other grid penalties or not, this is at flipping Monza!!! Insane!

Congrats to both Alex Albon and Nyck De Vries: incredible performances from both of you! Alex, so glad to hear that you are on the quick mend, that hospital scare was too much. "
