An update for Honda

NEWS STORY
09/06/2016

Honda will provide an upgraded power unit for McLaren at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

The Japanese manufacturer, which prior to the move had 14 tokens available, has not used a single token since the season got underway, has opted for what can only be described as a softly-softly approach to its upgrades insisting on introducing them tactically.

Clearly, the power-hungry Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has caused it to make a move, consequently new turbochargers will be fitted to both McLarens this weekend.

The upgrade coincides with the introduction of a new fuel from ExxonMobil which is expected to increase horsepower.

However, it is understood the new turbocharger will not increase sheer grunt but rather improve the efficiency of the harvesting of the power unit which in turn should improve lap times.

"@Darvi

They have to introduce the upgrades to match the engine change cycle otherwise Mclaren would hit their 5 engine per season limit very quickly and incur penalties. The upgrade was probably ready awhile ago but they had to wait their time."

"Honda seem to be some way behind and, while I understand their need to maximise the benefit gained from using the available tokens, not using them isn't really getting the job done. They appear to be lacking fuel efficiency and power as well as needing to increase the benefit from enery recovery. This is a start, but when will we see a Renault like improvement?"
