Ahead of the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix, Paul Williams, Chief Trackside Engineer, shares insights into the key technical factors that will shape the weekend.

What are the key technical challenges of Spa?
Paul Williams: Spa is one of the most demanding and varied circuits on the calendar, combining long, flat-out straights with a challenging mix of high- and low-speed corners - the car must be quick in a straight line while remaining nimble enough to handle rapid changes of direction.

The famous Eau Rouge section demands careful management of suspension travel, front ride height, and skid wear.

Weather remains a constant unknown, with rain always a possibility and conditions capable of shifting quickly throughout the weekend.

How do the 2026 regulations influence the approach this weekend?
PW: Spa is the most energy-sensitive circuit we've encountered so far this year, by some margin.

The approach to Eau Rouge can be varied by trading off deployment profile, energy optimality, and the ride-height gains available from the setup on the run up the hill.

We expect to utilise the full energy pack window: full at Turn 1, depleted by Turn 5, then full again at the Turn 14 exit before emptying by Turn 18. This leaves Sector 2 significantly starved of energy, with superclipping likely on both low- and high-fuel runs.

Five SLM zones have been added for 2026, all of which remain active in wet conditions. Zone 2 (Turns 4-5) has a delayed activation point, moved to the straight section.

What are the tyre challenges of the circuit?
PW: The compound allocation sits in the middle of the range, spanning C2/C3/C4. Without the step up to the harder compound, the hard tyre this year is effectively one step softer than last year's.

Spa is a moderate energy-density circuit, but its long lap length means energy loading is spread relatively evenly across all four tyres.

In qualifying, the long lap makes tyre preparation easier than at recent events. In the Grand Prix, we expect longer stints to become wear-limited.

What are the strategic considerations for the race?
PW: Spa is the second-easiest circuit of the year for overtaking, but battery management discipline will be crucial in wheel-to-wheel battle. This shifts the balance of priorities toward the race, making low-fuel pace more important than grid position.

The race is expected to be a clear one-stop strategy built around the hard tyre, with the main choice being which tyre to start on between medium or soft.

Spa also carries one of the highest safety car probabilities of the season, combined with frequently changeable weather. How quickly teams and drivers react to changing conditions will matter as much as the race plan they start with.
