Former Ferrari designer Nikolas Tombazis has been recruited by the FIA to focus on future single-seater regulations.

Tombazis enjoyed a long and accomplished career in Formula 1, first as an aerodynamicist with Benetton in 1992, before progressing to the position of chief aerodynamicist a year later, a position he went on to hold with both Ferrari and McLaren.

In 2005 he became McLaren's Project Chief Director, prior to returning to Maranello for a nine-year spell as Chief Designer.

In early 2016 he reappeared in the F1 paddock, this time as Chief Aerodynamicist to the ill-fated Manor.

His new role with the FIA will se him contributing to the regualtions across all the main single-seater categories while also being available to the F1 teams for matters of clarification of existing and future regulations.

In his new role, Tombazis, who basically replaced Marcin Budkowski who was controversially poached by Renault last year, will work alongside the FIA's technical director Gilles Simon and single-seater director Charlie Whiting.
