McLaren confirms Dell deal done

NEWS STORY
08/02/2018

McLaren has confirmed a multi-faceted, long-term partnership with Dell Technologies, the world's largest privately-controlled technology company.

Dell Technologies, which consists of seven global brands – Dell, Dell EMC, Pivotal, RSA, Secureworks, Virtustream and VMware – will bring its deep technology expertise to all McLaren Technology Group companies, including McLaren Racing and McLaren Applied Technologies, as well as benefitting McLaren's esports programme, World's Fastest Gamer.

The McLaren Technology Group has just completed the first part of its IT transformation journey towards a high-performing hybrid cloud capability. This includes a modern, agile, automated, performant and highly available set of data centre services, using Dell EMC compute, storage, and infrastructure management software.

The partnership will seamlessly integrate Dell Technologies' wide-ranging platform of solutions into McLaren's day-to-day operations, including support for design and manufacturing, trackside operations, telemetry, safety-critical ecosystems, storage, esports and simulation, fan engagement and guest experience.

McLaren and Dell Technologies intend to collaborate on future projects in the areas of security, cloud, digital and workplace transformation technologies, with scope for technical innovation not only within the two organisations but also the wider industry.

"McLaren's agreement with Dell Technologies expands beyond the traditional sponsorship model," sais Zak Brown. "We are like-minded organisations led by the key principles of technical innovation and human progress at the cutting-edge of data-driven technology.

"Formula 1 is a relentless environment, and partnering with Dell Technologies provides us with class-leading capabilities and support to drive invaluable efficiencies that will enable McLaren to perform at the highest possible level across our entire business operations. We are especially excited about the future possibilities that will arise within McLaren Applied Technologies, an area of our business that is growing fast and offers huge potential.

"This announcement is a further statement that McLaren has strong ambitions as we strive to take an important leap in performance both on-track and off it. Dell Technologies is the perfect partner and our two brands share the same ethos, which will propel us towards our business objectives for 2018 and beyond."

"Dell Technologies' relationship with McLaren builds upon a shared heritage of innovation, engineering excellence and high performance," added Jeremy Burton, Chief Marketing Officer, Dell Technologies. "Over the past few years, McLaren's rich history in motorsports has given rise to a more diverse and ambitious organisation that we're excited to partner with.

"Our partnership is expansive, enabling us to showcase our Dell Technologies portfolio from consumer gaming and esports to the enterprise edge, data centre and cloud.

"We look forward to playing a transformative role within every facet of the McLaren Group, both trackside and at the McLaren Technology Centre. It is the first time we have partnered as Dell Technologies in a global commercial agreement of this nature, and we look forward to a long-term collaboration."

""McLaren's agreement with Dell Technologies expands beyond the traditional sponsorship model," said Zak Brown."
So they're not getting a penny then.
Zak Brown does nothing but spew absolute rubbish."

"I'd say in this instance it was McLaren who approached Dell. And I'm sure that Zak Brown had contacts there in any case. This is something that's probably been on the burner for a year or so. But I'd also wager that no money is changing hands. This is more than likely a technology supply arrangement - hardware, software, and services, etc. Dell isn't famous for writing big sponsorship checks. Chalk it up to a deal that will save McLaren cash in the bank rather than putting money in. But Mr. Brown was brought in for a reason and the day of reckoning is due. Come on Zak, get your finger out, or Mansour and his buddies will be showing you the door too."

"I can actually speak from experience of doing business (or at least trying to) with said race team - albeit under the previous administration.

It goes like this,

If you are lucky they receive your glorious pitch, and after months of deliberation -and reviewing the various options / considerations on the original proposal, they inform you that you are the selected partner and invite you to Woking to sign said contracts / PO's etc...

Upon arrival you are greeted by a rather glamorous Italian Lady (I presume - accent and lots of glittery earrings, sparkly dress etc..) to remind you to be in awe and be privileged to deal with such a prestigious race team. She insists that you have must the full on guided tour of the Woking HQ before any business is discussed......

Upon which she gets to show you the trophy cabinet, the car workshop and various other bits of high end engineering that have been "given" to the team by team by various suppliers - oh sorry I mean partners over goodness knows how many years.

After the umpteenth time of hearing the words "given", alarm start to ring and you wonder about the financial expectations of your prospect.

At this point you are escorted to a home cinema room type of thing to receive a 15 minute pitch about the legacy and success of McLaren and pretty much how fortunate you are to be even given the time of day by such race team royalty, that by this time she really has disappeared up their own backside....

And now she moves in for the closer, which means this.

They will not buy your product.

But if you GIVE it to them, they allow you to use their conference rooms twice a year (months of advance pre booked notice required) allow you to say you are corporate partners of McLaren (but not to have any point of reference on their cars etc...) and get this - they will throw in some pre signed photos of Lewis and some other promo fodder, the type of which the truck drivers used to throw to throw out to the kids in Silverstone village on their way home back in the glorious eighties.

Paddock passes - you must be joking. Not even the Friday generally admission ticket.

At which point you head for the hills, and try to explain to your sales manager what nonsense did ensue and why you have come back empty handed. Unless of course he is well adverse to the ways of the team, upon which case he will tell you not to bother.

I can only assume that Michael Dell had more success than I did, he certainly has a bigger cheque book and is a bigger technology partner than I, he clearly has financial means to donate his hardware and software services - he even gets his name on the car.

Lucky old him.

"Beneath the surface, not such an impressive deal. Most teams are working with 'technology partners' in some respect. Dell do, however, look to be the one in this arrangement that could gain the most. If indeed they aren't putting 'shed loads of cash into Woking' in return for this, considering all of McLaren's capabilities, then I'd say someone, somewhere, undersold themselves. "

"@ Amspeed

Well what it won't be doing is pumping shed loads of cash into Woking.

It's all puff, nothing of any real significance and certainly not the Sony type deal the team really needs."

"So, again, what exactly will Dell be doing? The official language of McLaren is clearly now 'Zakspeak' replacing 'Ronspeak' that we'd all become accustomed to. "
