Sainz penalised

NEWS STORY

Carlos Sainz has been handed a three-place grid drop at his home Grand Prix after impeding Valtteri Bottas.

Williams failed to inform the Spaniard about the Cadillac closing in on a flying lap and Sainz did not take any action to make way for the incoming car.

The stewards therefore determined that Sainz unnecessarily impeded Bottas and handed him a three-place grid penalty.

Meanwhile there were warnings for both Mercedes drivers for failing to follow the race director's competition notes.

Russell left the track at Turn 5 to make way for an incoming car, but re-joined the track without staying to the right of the bollard in the run-off area. The Briton stated during the hearing that he stayed to the left of the bollard to re-join earlier because he was worrying about impeding the car behind. However, he admitted that he could have gone around the bollard.

Antonelli returned to the pits after setting his final lap time in Q3 without any other cars interfering and did not comply with the delta time requirements.

The Mercedes driver stated during the hearing that it was difficult for him to maintain the delta due to energy management requirements and minor technical issues. However, he admitted that he could have done more to comply with the delta time.

Elsewhere, Ferrari was given a reprimand for Charles Leclerc exceeding the time limit between the Safety Car lines.

The Monegasque returned to the pits after setting his final lap time in Q3 without any other cars interfering and did not comply with the delta time requirements.

During the hearing the team representative admitted that they provided Leclerc with a wrong delta time profile due to a miscalculation. Therefore, he complied with the delta displayed on his dash, but as this delta time was not correct he inadvertently breached the delta time requirements.

The stewards determined that in this case the team was exclusively at fault and the driver did not make any mistake. Therefore the penalty was imposed on the team.

The stewards also took into account that in this scenario the deviating delta time provided to Leclerc did not have any performance implication for him or any other car.
