FIA confirms Monaco DRS zone

NEWS STORY
23/05/2012

The FIA has confirmed that there will be one DRS zone at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix.

As in 2011, the activation zone will be shortly after Turn 16 with the activation zone shortly after the final turn (19). Throughout the weekend use of DRS in the tunnel is prohibited.

As previously reported, there have been a number of changes made to the circuit since last year, a couple in respect of the accidents involving Sergio Perez and Nico Rosberg.

First off, various sections of the circuit have been resurfaced in order to remove the bumps that were present in 2011 while tyre walls have been replaced by TecPro barriers in turns 1 (Ste Devote) and 14 (Swimming Pool).

A 'planter' has been removed on the right in the pit exit thereby allowing a straighter line out of the pits, while the crane situated on the end of the barrier in the run-off area at the Chicane has been removed thereby providing nearly 15 metres more space. Finally, an abrasive surface has been laid in the run-offs at turns 1 (Ste Devote), 5 (Mirabeau) and 10 (Chicane).

The stewards include 1992 world champion Nigel Mansell, who never won here but finished second twice, most notably in 1992 when he fought an epic battle with Ayrton Senna to regain the lead after losing it due to a late (still unexplained) pit stop.

Mansell is joined by FIA Vice President, Jose Abed, and Paul Gutjahr, President of the FIA Hill climb Commission, Board Members and President of Auto Sport Suisse SARL.
