Lando Norris has thrown his support behind the news that Monaco is to host one of ten Sprints in 2027.

Earlier this week F1 and the FIA released the 2027 schedule and one of the biggest surprises is that the Principality, known for its processional races, is to be one of ten venues hosting a Sprint over the course of the year.

Other than the fact that the Sprint will likely be a procession also - aren't they all - critics claim that Sprint qualifying will compromise one of the few highlights of the Monaco weekend, qualifying for the race itself.

However, 2025 world champion, Lando Norris is in favour of the move.

"Interesting," he told Sky Sports when asked about the proposal. "I guess the main thing is that means you've got FP1 and Sprint qualifying on Friday, which is the challenge," he added.

"Obviously not a lot happens in a race on Sunday or in the Sprint, but the challenge is just one practice session straight in, which has probably never happened before in Monaco.

"Obviously, it's tougher for us as drivers," he admitted. "You don't have as much time to build up to things so you're going to you're probably going have to try and risk a little bit more, earlier which is normally when you can see a bit more of a difference between people who can get comfy, try things and be at 99% and not go to 103 and 104% because in Monaco when you go to that limit it's game over.

"It's more exciting for the fans and the people watching."

Ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, F1 launched a new global marketing campaign, Five Lights, 90-second film narrated by actor Colin Farrell, which features all 22 drivers, and, according to the release "explores one of the sport's most iconic and dramatic moments: the pre-race countdown".

Indeed, the pre-race countdown is one of the "most iconic and dramatic moments" of a race weekend, which is exactly why the sport is determined to fit in as many as possible, hence the Sprints.

Almost as controversial as the decision to hold a Sprint in Monaco is the fact that the season opener in Bahrain - assuming it is held in Bahrain and not Malaysia or whatever - will also host a mini-Me race, meaning that under the revised rules the drivers will have just the one practice session in which to prepare.
