Sao Paulo Grand Prix: Practice team notes - Alpine

Pierre Gasly: "A slightly different Friday to normal for me today with Gabriele [Mini] in my car for Free Practice 1, so only the one session in the car on my side during Free Practice 2.

"Gabriele did a great job in that session to be up in P7, and it appeared the car was quite well balanced from the very start with Franco also up inside the top 10. I do not think the leaderboard in Free Practice 2 reflects how I am feeling inside the car after that session. While I am not completely happy with a few things, it was a bit messy our end on the Soft tyre and I locked up on my first push lap and then had to abort another, so there is definitely much more performance to quickly unlock and show. I am definitely feeling optimistic, especially as a tenth of a second makes up four places or so. I have always enjoyed driving at this track, so I am looking forward to more Practice tomorrow ahead of Qualifying where we'll give it our all to be in Q3 again."

Franco Colapinto: "It is good to be back in São Paulo and driving in Interlagos, this legendary track, always feels so special. Today went quite well and, in terms of competitiveness, we are looking quite good. We have some more work to do on the balance of the car and trying to feel more comfortable, but the team and I will work hard tonight to go through the data to see what areas we can change and improve. The underlying pace is there and the gaps to some of our rivals are very close, so it is important to maximise every detail. The track here has been resurfaced and it feels okay in the dry, some of the usual bumps remain, but, of course, we have not yet driven in wet conditions. There is some rain forecast, so that is something for us all to keep an eye on."

Gabriele Mini: "I am quite happy with how my second Free Practice session with the team went and, obviously, finishing in P7 was a pretty good result. I learnt a lot of things last weekend in Mexico City, so I knew a few areas I needed to work on heading into today, which was very useful. I began the programme with some aero testing which is important for the team with the useful data it provides. After that we moved into some performance running, starting on Mediums and then onto Softs. I felt the car was in a good place and I was relatively pleased with my push lap on Softs. There was definitely more time in that lap but there is also a lot to manage inside the car, so I also know it was far from perfect. Still, I was able to show some pace which was good, I was happy with it, and it was satisfying to learn that I was amongst the quickest of everyone in some corners on the lap. It was very different to Mexico, I felt way more grip here and I was just building and improving lap after lap. Once again, thank you to the team for the opportunity and now I look forward to seeing what I can do to assist the team for the remainder of the weekend."

Steve Nielsen: "We had Gabriele [Mini] in the car in Free Practice 1 for the second race in a row. He adapted very quickly to a new track for him, and he did not put a foot wrong. It was good to see him up there and competitive, so we were very pleased with the job he was able to do in the car. After missing the first session, it is safe to say Pierre is not totally happy in the car but a few small changes to help car ride over some of the kerbs and bumps should help him. With Franco up there in both sessions, clearly the time is in the car and it's now up to us to make those tweaks on set-up and give Pierre and Franco the tools to compete for Q3, which, judging by the gaps today, will be very tight. We know we have the pace, and our target is to maximise what we have in our hands and, hopefully, by Sunday, return with both cars inside the points."
