Max Verstappen says that he "seriously considered" quitting F1 over the new regulations.

A long-time critic of the planned formula, even before a car had physically taken to the track, it is only in recent weeks that the four-time world champion has eased off.

During pre-season testing he described the cars as "Formula E on steroids", and once the season got underway, and fans could see the truth for themselves, he continued to criticise the new formula, joined by almost all his colleagues bar the Mercedes and Ferrari drivers.

Though changes were hurriedly announced, Madring confirmed that energy management remains a major issue.

The likes of Fernando Alonso continue to criticise, while others, including Verstappen, have pulled back, no doubt after being warned off by the sport's powers that be.

At a time it was thought Verstappen might quit the sport, he agreed a new deal with Red Bull, however, talking to Bild he claims that such was his disillusionment with the sport he was close to walking away.

"Either you quit or you don't," he tells the German publication, "so it's a 50/50 decision.

"I seriously considered quitting," he continues, "but ultimately, I love racing. I don't have anything left to prove. I'm a four-time world champion and achieved everything I ever wanted after my first title.

"I don't race for the history books, but for myself, the team, and our fans," he insists. "That's why it was ultimately an easy decision."

Referring to his current plight, having yet to win a race this year, despite seven podiums, the Dutchman claims he is now enjoying the racing despite the fact that he is not in a position to fight for wins.

Yes, it would obviously be even more fun if I won every weekend, but the car just isn't capable of that right now," he admits.

"That's okay, because we're on the right track and we're a good team," he adds. "A lot of people have come and gone in recent months and years, so a few things needed to be readjusted, but now we've gelled as a unit.

"Everyone believes that we'll get back to the top. We're all giving it our all to achieve that goal, and it's a lot of fun."

Reading his comments, and watching him in the PR stunt that was 'racing' a hundred influencers, is almost like seeing R. P. McMurphy return to the hospital ward following his 'procedure'. (IYKYK)
