Having discovered a calibration issue, George Russell heads into the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend with renewed confidence.

Days after declaring over his radio that he had "no f****** battery down the straight" and that the situation had been "Un-f****** acceptable" the whole weekend, the Briton believes the issue has been fixed.

"These new power units are exceptionally complex," he told reporters at the Hungaroring today, "and there was something deeply embedded in the calibration of the code.

"It was almost impossible to see unless you knew exactly what to look for," he admitted, "but I'm glad we have found it.

"It's not like the hardware is wrong or there's a problem with the hardware," he added, "but there were two issues in Spa. I think the deployment was not quite deploying optimally across the lap. We saw this with Piastri as well, who had a similar issue. So that was one of my problems.

"On top of that, we had something separate. It was all linked to the same calibration being not quite right. I'm not going to say simply numbers on a screen, but now we know which numbers potentially were not correct. We can rectify that, recalibrate things, and give the power unit performance at its full potential.

"It's a huge load off my mind," he admitted. "But also while I'm driving, to be honest, because throughout some laps in Silverstone and then throughout the majority of Friday and Saturday in Spa, I was thinking about how I needed to drive to make the power unit fast in the straight, how I pick up the throttle, the gear usage, how early I am before throttle.

"The data was telling us that was probably the reason, but it turned out it wasn't the reason. So all of that effort over the course of three sessions trying to re-optimise my driving around a new technique was kind of for nothing.

"So I'm looking forward now to going into a weekend where I can just try and focus on driving fast, focus on the simple things.

"I definitely feel this is the most resilient I've ever been in my whole life," he admitted, "and I take pride in my mentality outside of the car.

"I still believe in myself and the team," he insisted, "even when everything looks against us. Unfortunately, I've had too much practice of being disappointed.

"Last week was a slap on the face, but I am closer in the championship than I was four races ago, so I head into the weekend with a positive mindset and excitement about what's to come, rather than disappointment of what's happened."

Asked about his radio outburst, he said: "We all hold ourselves to the highest level, and my emotions were exceptionally high because I got knocked out of the race.

"Radio messages, 99% of the time, are words that are said through pure frustration and hot-headedness," he explained. "I am the first person to look at myself in the mirror and see where I can improve.

"It's nobody's fault, but we need to limit these issues. The whole team is standing by me and vice-versa, and ultimately we have achieved what we wanted to in the sense of finding there was an problem.

If you just sit there and don't express your views, maybe you find an issue, maybe you don't, but you don't move forward. We're all humans within the machine, within the race car and we're fighting for everything we've got."
