Drivers fear that Yo-yoing and closing speeds will present an even greater danger in today's Grand Prix following Saturday's Sprint.

The Sky team loved it, former racers Jenson Button and Martin Brundle declaring it fantastic racing, but then again they are paid to spout such nonsense.

However, in the eyes of many, those manic opening laps weren't about racing, they were about a regulation overhaul that many have hated from the start.

Despite Stefano Domenicali's insistence that it's all fantastic, that critics don't know what they're talking about and that F1 has sold out, many fear the sport continues to ride its luck.

Thankfully there were no serious incidents, but then again this was a Sprint and consequently drivers always show a little caution, but today the gloves will be off.

Max Verstappen, who was warning about the new rules long before a wheel had turned in anger, has clearly given up.

"I've decided for myself to not say anything about that anymore," the Dutchman told reporters when asked about what we had all just witnessed.

Then again, the Dutchman, who fell victim to Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri on the opening lap, probably thought it best not to further promote the fact.

That said, Leclerc admitted concern at the closing speeds.

"The tricky thing is that when you were in a fight, we were very vulnerable because we have a very different deployment than others," said the Ferrari driver. "So it was very difficult for me to overtake.

"On my way to Turn 15, I was very, very slow compared with the cars around, and Max was even slower, to be honest. There was just huge differences, and it's been quite a few races where we haven't seen this amount of differences between cars, which makes the fighting a bit tricky," he admitted.

Indeed, it is the very nature of Silverstone, with its long straights and fast, flowing corners that has seen the return of yo-yoing and concern over closing speeds, even though broadcasters and the powers that be, based on the evidence of Canada, Monaco, Barcelona and Austria, circuits more suited to the new regs, told us the issues had gone away.

Piastri, who admitted to spending most of the opening lap "trying to avoid crashing into the back of people", is aware that Spa will produce similar problems.

"Lap one was just chaos with the energy usage," said the Australian. "Pretty dangerous at some points, to be honest, but that's what we've got

"Then after that the following (rivals) was just very, very difficult in terms of staying on top of the car.

"Some things to look at, for sure, but at least we know what to expect tomorrow," he added, "which is chaos."

Hopefully, that's all it will be, chaotic, a chance for the Sky team and the sport's new fans to scream their heads off, but for many, despite Domenicali's claim that "overtaking is overtaking", the sport continues to ride its luck.
