While Toto Wolff seeks to persuade the sport's powers-that-be to allow teams to run third cars, mainly in a bid to secure berths for his own drivers unable to find seats for 2019, Haas team boss, Guenther Steiner admits to being against the idea.

"I'm not in agreement with a third car because it could confuse the whole picture," says the Italian. "It would be very difficult to understand for the fans and new spectators that sometimes a third car could run.

"It would distort the actual championship, in my opinion," he added. "I think we need to sit back and come up with a better idea."

Asked if Haas would ever consider a third car, Steiner, who has enough on his hands keeping Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen in line, admits: "As it stands, we have no interest to field a third car. If somebody comes up and pays for it, yes we can consider it. Until that happens, there is no thinking about a third car for us."

The Italian was also not overly impressed with the concept image of 2021 cars released last weekend, asked of he feel the concept could help bridge the gap to the big three, he replied: "The gap can just be bridged with a budget cap.

"Whatever we design, that will not bridge the gap. Whatever design you propose, people with more resources and more money can just do more work, and more is better in the end. It will not bring the field together."

"And budget caps for F1 are not the answer either, all it will do is dumb the sport down to the lowest denominator (the team at the bottom end of the table). If a budget cap is put in place I can see the big teams just move on and create their own series where they can explore new technologies under their own rules. All that would be left is a very expensive club race series "

"I agree with Haas. With today's reliability, the big 3 would scoop the first 9 positions leaving the midfield to scrap for 1 point.

Having said that, I would be all for 3 car teams testing on Fridays, extending it even to Sat FP3 (I am sure that this will have to be monitored lol). Bottom line: We need to get these drivers as much testing as possible, and logging real kms on all F1 series tracks... and not just on a @#$%^&* simulator. "
