Drivers' Commission meets in Paris

FIA's Drivers' Commission discusses a number of issues including track limits.

The commission, which was established in 2013 at the instigation of Jean Todt, and represents participants from all levels of motor sport, met in Paris, and those present included commission president Emerson Fittipaldi, vice-president Tom Kristensen and Nigel Mansell.

On the agenda was the need to add further sections to the Drivers' Code of Conduct and in particular the need to find a solution to instil respect for track limits in drivers of all ages - the commission believing the increased tarmac run-offs on circuits has led to scope for stricter enforcement of track limits.

Another theme of the meeting was the desire to improve cockpit safety for single seaters, and while the commission is aware of the developments being made in this area, it was stressed that the importance of solutions developed for Formula One need to be simple and affordable enough to be implemented at all levels of single seater racing.

Driver training was also raised; the notion being to create a mandatory course for young drivers progressing from karts to cars that will breed an inherent awareness of the drivers' responsibilities and expectations regarding safety. Such a course would include technical and sporting training, as well as technique training, and could potentially involve on-site mentoring from a member of the commission.
