Having heard the appeals from McLaren and Red Bull over the Monaco result, it is understood that a decision will not be reached for several weeks.

The two teams have appealed the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly's third place at the event, a decision which impacted the results of Isack Hadjar, who dropped to fourth as a result, and Oscar Piastri, who dropped from fourth to fifth.

The Monaco stewards had imposed two 5-second time penalties on Gasly for pit-lane speeding during the race, for recorded speeds of 60.1 km/h and 60.4 km/h respectively.

However, the stewards subsequently received two petitions for review and several days later determined that there was a significant and relevant new element that was unavailable to them at the time of their original decisions, this being an error relating to the timing loops where the measurements were taken.

Consequently, both 5-second penalties were rescinded and the race classification amended accordingly.

Mercedes subsequently lodged a Right of Review in respect of George Russell, who had received a drive-through penalty for failing to serve his initial speeding penalty correctly, and was due to attend a stewards' hearing on 20 June, but withdrew its petition before the hearing was held.

Meanwhile McLaren and Red Bull lodged their appeals against the decisions and it is these that were heard on Tuesday (25 August) before the International Court of Appeal.

Unlike Gasly, Piastri and Russell had actually served their penalties during the race and therefore they could not be undone, and it is the wider implications of this that forms a key factor in why McLaren is challenging the result.

"We go to the hearing with a double intent," Andrea Stella told reporters at Zandvoort last weekend. "The first intent is more general than the interest of McLaren. We think that the process that happened after the race in Monaco needs to be reviewed because from fairness for all competitors, the fact that the penalty was removed introduces some significant elements of concern. And we would like to take the opportunity of the International Court of Appeal for a clarification of this aspect.

"The second aspect is the interest of McLaren ourselves," he added. "We were also materially penalised for having served a penalty that is not appealable. And this cost us points in the championship.

"So, there's a general interest for Formula 1 and the integrity of the sport. And there's a material interest for McLaren in terms of our championship impact. These are the two points of view, the two perspectives that we would like to pursue and seek clarification for in the coming International Court of Appeal."

The International Court of Appeal will now decide not only whether it was right to rescind Gasly's penalties, whilst also considering the impact of the decision relating to drivers who had already served their penalties.

It is anticipated a decision could take two to three weeks.
