Grove outfit is undergoing a "huge numbers of projects" in a bid to put right what's gone wrong this season.

Many were surprised to see both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon commit to another season with Williams, especially at a time the Grove outfit appears to be in freefall.

Indeed, the situation was probably best summed up when the pair collided in the closing stages of the Dutch Grand Prix.

From best of the rest in 2025, the multi-champions are in danger of slipping to tenth should Aston Martin continue to improve.

Before a wheel had turned in anger, it was clear there was an issue, with the team missing the shakedown, following which there was online speculation over the various issues with its 2026 contender, not least its weight.

Since taking the reins, former Mercedes man, James Vowles, has been remarkably open in terms of admitting the issues the team faces, the Briton clearly shocked by the fact that much of the infrastructure and working practices were years out of date.

As the team struggles to turn things around, Vowles admits that getting his two drivers to remain on board was a significant step in the process.

"As you saw, we announced both driver contracts last week, and it's hard to put into words what it means to the organisation when that happens," he said.

"It's a monumental change," he continued. "We have made mistakes this winter, which we're still paying for today, and the drivers are paying for on the car that we've delivered on track.

"What was great is when we started to show the future that's beyond here, one that's more around the long term, their commitment came to the forefront. And that's really important to me. It's important to the team. It's important to everyone because ultimately we're here and we know we have a pathway to go, but we're here fighting as a team."

Like its rivals, Williams is developing upgrades for the forthcoming races, however there is also the need to put right the (unspecified) mistakes made over the winter which have led to the current situation.

"We have huge numbers of projects, though, in the background to make sure that we're just digging out what went wrong this winter and fixing for the long term," said Vowles. "And that's our commitment today as it will be in six months' time."

Clearly, other than fixing its 2026 car, Williams faces the task of not repeating the mistakes made last winter, something which the Grove outfit literally cannot afford to happen.
