Schumacher wins on F4 debut weekend

Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael, has won on his single-seater debut weekend.

Whilst we fully intend complying with the wishes of his family and management by allowing the youngster to get on with his career and not place unrealistic expectations on him, it would be wholly wrong not to report such an important milestone in the career of youngster participating in a sport which, unlike no other, often sees children following in the footsteps (tyre tracks) of their fathers.

Having previously raced in Karts, this year Mick (16) makes the switch to single-seaters and this weekend marked his debut in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship in which he is racing for the Dutch outfit Van Amersfoort Racing.

Qualifying on Friday saw the youngster record the tenth fastest time of his group meaning he would start Race 1, which boasted a field of 35 drivers, from P19 on the grid.

Finishing that first race ninth, Schumacher was the highest place of 11 rookies, also posting the fastest lap by a newcomer.

"Of course, I'm pleased that I caught up," he said, "it didn't occur to me at first that I was best rookie! After yesterday's qualifying and my grid position, I'm really satisfied."

The second race was a little harder, with Schumacher losing eleventh to Jonathan Cecotto, son of former F1, DTM driver and motorcycle world champion Johnny Cecotto, in the final stages of the race.

Starting Race 3 from second on the grid, his starting position decided by the result of Race 1, Schumacher made the perfect start to take the lead before the first corner however a subsequent incident was to bring out the Safety Car.

Keeping his nerve as the race re-started Schumacher subsequently found himself under pressure from teammate Joey Mawson. Though Mawson closed in at a relentless pace, his first attempt to overtake Schumacher was successfully defended. With the Safety Car deployed after Benjamin Mazatis spun off track, Schumacher was able to hold off Mawson until the flag (behind the Safety Car).

The results sees Schumacher go into the next round of the 8 round series, at the Red Bull Ring, fifth in the overall standings.

"I'm ecstatic, of course!" said Schumacher. "My first race weekend could not have gone better! We had a good start, because my tyres were still fresh, and it went well from then on, apart from at the end where things were close again. I was not too unhappy about the safety car.

"All in all, I'm really pleased with this start to the season and look forward to the next set of races."
