Michael Schumacher's manager has called for realistic expectations as son of 7-time world champion prepares for F4 race debut.

Sabine Kehm, who is managing Mick Schumacher, was present for the pre-season test at Oschersleben today as the 16-year-old prepares for his first season of single-seater racing.

"My message is to be realistic with expectations," she told {i]Reuters. "This is Mick's very first year in a formula series. He has to learn a lot of new things and make a lot of new experiences because the difference between karting and formula cars is quite big.

"Give him time," she continued, "don't over-react in terms of expectations and just have him go step by step. Of course he will try and do his very best but he also has to learn a lot. This is really just the start of it."

Aware of the media attention he will attract, the youngster originally raced as Mick Betsch, using his mother Corinna's maiden name.

Having initially tested for Jenzer Motorsport he subsequently signed to the Dutch Van Amersfoort Racing team for the eight race series that starts up later this month at Oschersleben, his teammate is Harrison Newey, son of Red Bull design legend Adrian Newey.

"He's only a year younger than Max Vestappen, has had a similar background, but started Karting later in life, has probably had the best equipment and coaching money can buy so why would we not have high expectations. If he wan't to get into F1 he has to rip through the lower formulas in the next 4-5 years otherwise he'll be passed over. We'll soon have a grid full of 'Son of F1 Driver'."
