In a post-race video report for Mercedes, Nico Rosberg insists he could have made first chicane but feared flat spotting his tyres

As the conspiracy theories continues - some emanating from those who should know better - the German, who remains 22 points ahead in the world championship, gave his side of things as he relaxed in Ibiza.

He claims that he could have made the corner on the 29th lap - and thus avoided handing the lead to his teammate – but feared that his front tyres would be left "square".

"The safer way, the best way, the only way was to go straight on so that I didn't ruin my tyres and have to make another pit stop," he declares.

"All in all it's not a disaster," he adds, "I only lost 7 points to Lewis and am still 22 ahead."

"Conspiracy theories? Just so much BS. Probably he could have made the corner but was so afraid of making contact that he took the 'escape' option. I think from here on in it's a purely psychological game between Nico and Lewis. I'm loving it and I respect Mercedes for how they are handling it - apart from the Twitter survey........"
