Irvine moved to back of Spanish GP grid - (updated)

Eddie Irvine will start tomorrow’s Spanish GP from the back of the grid after a fuel sample taken from the Ulsterman’s R3 failed to match the one previously supplied to the FIA.

A second sample was taken, and Jaguar personnel were summoned to a stewards meeting this afternoon, but after discussion the decision was made to delete all times recorded by Irvine during qualifying and he will now start behind Alex Yoong.

Irvine, who had qualified 15th has been informed of the decision and was typically forthright, commenting from his yacht in a harbour north of Barcelona; "To be honest it doesn't make much difference, but at least I might get to overtake some cars!"

Jaguar has issued a statement stressing that no performance advantage was provided by the Castrol fuel that failed to match the previous sample, but stewards have decided that Irvine must be penalised nevertheless.

The team has 2300 litres of racing fuel, and 150 litres didn't match the sample lodged with the FIA, which is why Irvine was relegated to the back of the grid.
