While it has upgrades in the pipeline, the big problem for Mercedes is when to introduce them.

Of the eleven races thus far, the Silver Arrows have claimed ten poles and eight wins, which, while very impressive, does not reflect the advantage it was thought to have at the start of the season.

Indeed, due to various factors, since the Austrian Grand Prix it has been out-scored by Ferrari, which, it is fair to say, has its own issues.

Then again, the Italian team's upgrade schedule has been so intense that Toto Wolff has questioned its legitimacy, certainly in terms of the budget cap, while McLaren has also introduced new parts on a regular basis.

The German team introduced a significant package in Canada, but as the championship fight intensifies it needs to react to the growing threat from its rivals.

Wolff admits that upgrades are needed, but the problem is when to introduce them.

"We need to be really strategic about when to bring the upgrades," says the Austrian. "When do we think they will have the biggest impact on performance, rather than just throwing it in at every grand prix like in the past.

"We cannot do this, so you will have to eventually put an upgrade in and probably you leapfrog a little bit the others and then it kind of flattens out and the other ones come stronger," he adds.

"So yeah, we're bringing upgrades, we're closely monitoring how much we can bring and at the moment cost cap wise we're in a good spot, we've tried to have it a little bit more second half of the season, let's see if that's enough."

As for reliability, both drivers are on their fourth engines of the season, and the team is aware that both face grid penalties further down the line. Indeed, it is widely thought that Kimi Antonelli will take his penalty at his home race next month.

"Looking at how many we've used in the first half of the season, it's almost inevitable that at some point there will be penalties to take," said deputy team principal, Bradley Lord in Hungary. "That's something that the strategy team and guys in Brixworth will work to figure out what the optimum route is through the rest of the season."
