In the aftermath of Sunday's fiasco, driver turned commentator, David Coulthard believes teams need to return to the old ways.

An 'issue' with the driver tracking function led to a meltdown of the automatic blue flag system, which led to understandable chaos on the track.

The most high-profile incident involved Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri, but there were plenty of others affected, including the Racing Bulls pair and Oliver Bearman.

As a result of the issue, with the automatic system clearly unreliable, indeed giving false information, officials had to rely on information from the trackside marshals.

Coulthard, a 13-time Grand Prix winner with Williams and McLaren, and who also spent four seasons with Red Bull, believes the sport needs to take a step back and consider a return to the old ways.

"We have to get into the blue flag scenario in Budapest," he told the Up to Speed podcast. "It was like first day of school, and I'm talking kindergarten in the way that drivers were reacting."

While admitting that there was a clear technical issue, the Scot, like Toto Wolff, who described the engineers failing to keep their drivers informed as "Telletubbies", believes the teams could, and should, have done more. In particular, he believes teams should have engineers watching the gaps, spotting who is where and advising their drivers accordingly.

"Some will say the timing streams had an issue," he said. "But there is such a thing as just being spatially aware, and your engineers actually looking over the pit wall, and I made this comment in commentary.

"Very few of the teams now actually have a gap on their, what is affectionately known as, prat perch, the engineering wall where the engineers and the team principal normally sit," he continued.

"In the case of Toto, of course, he's sitting back in the garage, but they look, and they did look over the pit wall back in the day, and you have a certain awareness of where the other cars are."

While the Scot admits that keeping track during qualifying would be difficult, he believes that this would not be the case during races as the field falls into a pattern.

"You can't ever factor in qualifying on somebody coming out of the pit lane," he said. "But in a grand prix, when people are circulating at pace, you can usually tell. Well, not usually, you absolutely can tell! It just wasn't good enough."

Good advice, but also one has to ask why the system failed in the first place, and what lessons have been learned. Sadly, not enough coverage has been given to the actual failure which comes just a couple of months after the Monaco pitlane fiasco.
