How Many Teams Have Won the Drivers' Championship But Not the Constructors' Title In the Same Season?

NEWS STORY
31/10/2024

In theory, the team that wins the Drivers' Championship should win the Constructors' title too.

They should accrue a huge number of points courtesy of their world champion, while presumably being responsible for the grid's fastest car.

But the 2024 season has been no ordinary campaign... so much so, it's possible that Max Verstappen could win the drivers' title while Red Bull finish a lowly third in the team standings.

Squad Goals

While Verstappen is likely to have just about enough of a cushion to hang on to the Drivers' Championship, in the team battle it's all to play for.

Those that bet on sports will note that McLaren are the favourites at odds of 3/10, but with Ferrari very much in the hunt at 6/4. Red Bull languish well behind at 50/1.

Resources like the Paddy Power blog will preview the four remaining races of the season, with the takeaway point likely to be that Red Bull are simply too far off the pace to win a Grand Prix right now.

Verstappen is grinding away. Although his last win came in Spain back in June, the Dutchman has recorded four podium finishes since.

As for his teammate Perez, the 2024 season has been challenging. The Mexican hasn't recorded a single finish in the top five - let alone contending for a win - since Miami back in May.

These performance issues have led to speculation that Red Bull may consider changes before the season concludes.

This has impacted the Austrian team's standings in the Constructors' Championship.

Taking One for the Team

The last time a team faced such difficulties in the Constructors' standings, despite winning the Drivers' title, was in 2021.

Verstappen won his maiden Drivers' Championship, but once again he lacked support from Perez and Mercedes swooped to land the team title.

Otherwise, it's back to 2008 we go...

That was the year that Lewis Hamilton landed his maiden world title with McLaren, but his teammate Heikki Kovalainen wasn't quite at the same level. Ferrari, helmed by Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa, were consistently strong - winning the Constructors' Championship for the Prancing Horse.

So the takeaway point is this: since the start of the new millennium, there has been a double celebration for the winning driver/team in 22 of the 24 completed seasons.

What Red Bull have 'achieved' in 2024 is a remarkable anomaly... and one that will surely lead to much soul-searching during the off season.
