Italian GP: Practice team notes - Pirelli

NEWS STORY
31/08/2018

Wet conditions and low temperatures characterised FP1 at the Italian Grand Prix, before the weather improved for the afternoon FP2 session, in which Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was fastest on the P Zero Red supersoft tyre. However, there was a lengthy delay following a big accident at the start of FP2, which meant that the drivers had only just over an hour of dry running in total today.

The variety of conditions meant that the entire range of Pirelli tyres available was used today, with the teams able to get an initial read on all the compounds. But with running on the slicks limited only to the afternoon, it's currently hard to tell exactly what the representative wear and degradation rates - and so the performance gaps between the compounds - will be.

Mario Isola: "From the point of view of data collection, it wasn't an easy day, as there was really only an hour or so of dry running without interruptions. This means that the teams had to adjust their strategies and compress their programmes in order to maximise that period of time, especially because conditions are expected to be quite uncertain for the rest of the weekend. On FP1, the Teams were able to work on the crossover point between wet and slick tyres, while on FP2 they do some long runs, despite the red flag period, and to understand the gap between the compounds."
