"Windbag" drivers meet for dinner

NEWS STORY

If further proof were needed that F1 drivers are enjoying a united front these days, one need look no further than social media as 18 drivers met up for dinner ahead of Chinese Grand Prix weekend.

Indeed, all but Kimi Raikkonen, Romain Grosjean, Kevin Magnussen, Jolyon Palmer and Rio Haryanto appeared to be present.

Whilst the whereabouts of Raikkonen - who was actually in Taipei opening a new Ferrari flagship service centre and showroom - led to speculation, some wondering if he had gone off for ice cream or was perhaps under the table, it is understood Haryanto was attending a fan event whilst the Renault duo also had 'prior commitments'. Then again, last week Renault revealed that whilst in China Kevin Magnussen prefers Japanese food.

In addition to 17 of the drivers who will line-up on Sunday's grid, the dinner photograph also included Renault reserve Esteban Ocon.

The social gathering comes weeks after the Grand Prix Drivers' Association called for changes to the sport, a move which was subsequently dismissed by Bernie Ecclestone who referred to the drivers as "windbags", claiming that as they are simply echoing the views of their team bosses they shouldn't be allowed to talk.

Needless to say, the F1 supremo will be delighted to know his comment didn't escape the drivers' attention, Nico Rosberg accompanying his picture with the hashtag #windbagsunited.

Indeed every driver present - at least those who have accounts - subsequently took to social media to ensure the picture (and message) were not lost.

Other than what might have been discussed at this high-octane dinner party, our only remaining question is; who picked up the tab...

""Windbag" drivers should have invited Ecclestone to their dinner and in some diplomatic way they should have asked him why he thinks they are "windbag" drivers and after this perhaps Ecclestone would have ended up paying the bill !!"
