Bianchi: "Serious but stable"

NEWS STORY
06/10/2014

In its latest update on the condition of Jules Bianchi, following his accident during the Japanese GP, the FIA advises that the French youngster is in a "serious but stable condition".

While Marussia has called for understanding and patience, especially in these early days of his treatment, when contacted, Matteo Bonciani, the FIA's F1 Head of Communications & Media Delegate, said: "Bianchi is in a serious but stable condition. That's all I can say, and I'm doing this update on Jules' parents' behalf."

Bianchi's parents, Philippe and Christine, have arrived in Japan and are now with their son at the Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi.

Bonciani also revealed that Professor Gerard Saillant, President of the FIA Institute, and who has been involved in sport for over twenty years, operating on some of the top athletes in the world, especially in football and motor racing, and who oversaw Michael Schumacher's treatment following his skiing accident in December, is also on route to Japan together with Nicolas Todt, Bianchi's manager.

"I hope he can make a full recovery. However grave his situation it has improved from the initial idea that F1 had lost a driver during a race after 20 years. "

"Looking at photographs and video it looked as if the Marussia had gone under the tractor backwards and out the other side. Two things can be done quickly to prevent that. Skirts can be fitted around the tractor, perhaps an Armco rectangle all around with rounded corners. Unyielding but better than the alternative. Also some years ago after a number of motorway accidents, slow moving maintenance vehicles were fitted with a shock absorbing rear buffer designed to concertina on impact. You can probably buy those off the shelf."

"My heart goes out to Jules' family and friends. I hope he is able to make a full recovery. I am glad no one else got hurt which could have easily happened."
