Vettel working well into the early hours

Mat Coch writes:

He makes it look so easy, however behind his boyish charm and youthful exuberance lies a steely competitor determined to succeed. On the cusp of his second world championship title, which he could wrap up this weekend despite another five races remaining, one could be forgiven for thinking Sebastian Vettel could begin to relax.

It was never meant to be like this of course. After years of dominance by Michael Schumacher and Ferrari the points score was changed in an attempt at reinvigorating the championship. For a time it worked, creating some of the most exciting championship battles the sport has seen. Then came 2011.

Having found his stride at the end of 2010 Vettel has steamrollered the opposition, winning eight of eleven races. The only blip on an otherwise perfect record being a lowly fourth place in Germany. His rivals have been left without an answer, scampering for whatever crumbs have fallen from the Red Bull table.

Far from resting on his laurels however, the 24-year-old, who tomorrow could become the youngest ever double Formula One world champion, continues to work hard. Long after the press corps had filed off to Singapore's nearby bars and restaurants, Vettel was still in the circuit, pouring over his car looking to unlock its full potential. Even Michael Schumacher, famed for his attention to detail and incredible work ethic, had long departed the circuit for his hotel by the time Vettel finally emerged at 5am.

Wandering through the paddock, alone and unmolested by the attentions of the world he was visibly tired: "Working hard?," I called as he headed for the exit. "Always," came the response, followed by a quick smile and a nod. Then he was gone, wandering through the early morning air on his way to his hotel, and no doubt bed.
