Briatore to quit in two years

Renault Team Principal, Flavio Briatore, certainly one of the more colourful individuals in the F1 paddock, has revealed that he is to quit in two years, at the end of the 2010 season.

The news doesn't come as a shock since the Italian, who has had health problems in recent years, had signalled some time ago that he was considering standing down. Furthermore, he certainly doesn't have to continue working in order to earn a crust.

As it happens, the Italian only revealed his decision to quit when asked by reporters if he would ever consider joining Ferrari, a move that his protege, Fernando Alonso, is expected to make in the next year or so.

"I like to beat Ferrari," said the Italian, "but when my team doesn't win, being Italian, I obviously support Ferrari.

"But I don't think I will go to work at Maranello," he added, "especially as in two years I will stop."

Asked about the new rules for F1, Briatore, who has long argued that the sport should be more entertaining, said: "The new rules will make Formula One more exciting and human. I agree that the constructors, in order to try to avoid the crisis, have given a good example by trying new ideas."
