2007 season car unveiled

NEWS STORY
06/12/2006

The GP2 series has unveiled the final incarnation of its debut challenger. The 2007- spec car is the latest and last version of the original Dallara-designed single-seater with which the series was launched in 2005 and, following extensive testing by the GP2 series organisation, will be raced by all 13 GP2 series teams during the forthcoming season.

The GP2 series promised from the outset that it would substantially revise its car for the start of each new season, and after the move from grooved to slick Bridgestone tyres between 2005 and 2006, and a subsequent reduction in rear-end downforce to compensate for the increased grip the new tyres created, an all-new aero kit has been designed for 2007. This new kit includes an engine-cover-mounted mid wing, new sidepod-mounted exhaust chimneys and 'T wings' and an all new rear wing assembly. The principle behind the annual reinvention is to maintain the challenge of the series for teams and drivers alike, whilst ensuring that the racing spectacle remains enthralling for the series’ ever-expanding legion of fans watching at the tracks and at home on television.

The 2007-spec car is making its first public appearance today at the 2006 Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco, to coincide with the appearance of the series at this important industry event for the very first time. GP2 series organiser Bruno Michel will address the assembled delegates on Thursday December 7 on the topic of "the establishment and success of the formula one feeder series."

GP2 Series Organiser, Bruno Michel: "I am proud and happy to see the latest revision of the GP2 series car make its first public appearance here in Monaco at the Motor Sport Business Forum. We have been very happy with the way it has run in testing and I am sure that these latest updates will ensure an exciting new challenge faces our teams and drivers at the start of the 2007 season.

"The GP2 series continues to go from strength to strength. In just two years the GP2 series has become the best place for the finest up-and-coming young driver talents to catch the attention of the Formula One world. Indeed, in 2007 we will see four of our graduates line-up on the F1 grid, amongst them our first two champions Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, as Heikki Kovalainen makes his F1 race debut for the World Champion Renault F1 Team.

"As the first three-year cycle of the GP2 series enters its final season, we must pay tribute to our partners Renault and Bridgestone for the faith and commitment they have shown to the series and its ideals. Together, we have created a strong and viable feeder category for Formula One."
