Michelin and IMS attempt to woo the fans

As part of its 'peace offering' to race fans following the debacle that was the 2005 United States Grand Prix, Michelin has announced a raft of further initiatives aimed at winning over race fans.

In addition to offering refunds to fans who had purchased tickets for the race, which was eventually contested by just six drivers, the French company gave away 20,000 tickets for this year's race.

The tyre manufacturer, which is due to leave Formula One at the end of the season, has announced further initiatives which include an autograph signing session to be attended by drivers representing all six of the Michelin partner teams: BMW Sauber; Honda F1 Team; McLaren Mercedes; Red Bull Racing; Renault F1 and Scuderia Toro Rosso. The participating drivers and exact times will be announced closer to the pre-race event.

There will also be a special question-and-answer session with 2005 world Champion, Fernando Alonso.

"We are pleased to provide US GP fans with this great opportunity to hear from one of the most exciting drivers in the world," said Frederic Henry-Biabaud, Michelin Group director of competition.

"This will be a rare chance for American race fans to learn more about the new F1 champion, from his interests to how he prepares for a race," he added. The June 29 public session will be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the annual Pit Walkabout.

The Michelin USGP fan appreciation program will also witness a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis to support the Race Against Drugs program designed to help children ages 9 to 12. Michelin will donate $5 for every tire sold at participating Michelin dealers during the May 29 to June 25 promotion.

Race Against Drugs captures the color and excitement of racing and the commitment by America's racing heroes to convey to youth that there is no such thing as "harmless" drug use. The program provides young people with creative options in group activities or individual activities to successfully handle the drug issues that face them on a day-to-day basis.

Representatives of the Boys & Girls Clubs and participants in the Race Against Drugs program will be hosted by Michelin at various U.S. Grand Prix activities.
