I saved Button, says Bernie

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone claims that he stepped in and prevented Jenson Button, and the BAR team, from being thrown out of this year's World Championship, following the fuel tank fiasco.

"Max took a hard line on BAR and wanted them thrown out of the entire championship," said the Englishman, according to The Sun. "I told him to come back from that a bit because I was worried Honda might leave the sport. I asked him not to go for an entire season's ban because it would also not have been good for the sport."

Prior to the International Court of Appeal hearing, Ecclestone had said that he believed BAR to be guilty and that if this were to be the case the Brackley team should have the book thrown at it, which presumably would have meant throwing the team out of the championship.
