Ferrari duo top Saturday practice

NEWS STORY
17/08/2002

Ferrari duo Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello stayed ahead of their rivals in Hungary this morning, topping the timesheets ahead of McLaren star Kimi Raikkonen.

Ralf Schumacher was the first man out on track, closely followed by Juan Pablo Montoya as the WilliamsF1 duo worked to improve on the positions achieved during this morning’s earlier practice session.

Both Ralf and Juan Pablo Montoya have struggled so far this weekend, and will be hoping for better fortunes in qualifying. Juan Pablo managed to improve to 4th during second practice, while Ralf could only manage to be 8th quickest.

Both Jordan drivers slid off track during practice, but both managed to recover. Sato almost became stuck in the mud early in the session but managed to rejoin the track, while Fisichella narrowly avoided hitting the barriers later on.

A number of drivers continued to find themselves caught out by the Hungaroring, with Michael Schumacher just one of the drivers to take a trip through the gravel.

The final practice session before qualifying was the busiest of the weekend so far, with Anthony Davidson again completing the most laps.

The Englishman continued to give team-mate Mark Webber a run for his money this morning, and the pair swapped positions for much of the session with the Australian eventually getting a slight edge on the rookie.

Although temperatures have continued to rise this morning, second practice was conducted under overcast skies, prompting speculation that rain could be on the way this afternoon.

David Coulthard is another driver who has struggled for pace so far this weekend, and the Scot ended Saturday practice down in 11th.

Pedro de la Rosa was the quickest Jaguar driver this morning, finishing practice 13th while Eddie Irvine was 18th.

Felipe Massa and Olivier Panis have both been on top form since arriving in Hungary and the pair head in to qualifying 5th and 6th fastest respectively. Team-mates Nick Heidfeld and Jacques Villeneuve were 9th and 15th.

Jenson Button was lucky not to lose much track time after ending this morning’s first practice session out on track, but the Englishman could not improve from 16th.
