Schumacher still quickest

NEWS STORY
17/08/2002

Michael Schumacher continued to set the pace in Hungary this morning, topping the practice timesheets ahead of Rubens Barrichello and an impressive Olivier Panis.

Toyota duo Mika Salo and Allan McNish were the first men on track this morning, while Anthony Davison was also out early on as he continued to familiarise himself with a new circuit and car.

Olivier Panis dominated the first half of practice, but Michael Schumacher went straight to the top of the timesheets after posting his first quick lap of the day later on in the session.

Overnight rain cleared away much of the rubber deposited on the track yesterday, and a number of drivers found themselves sliding on the slippery surface although there were no major incidents. There has been no sign of rain so far this morning, and temperatures are slightly higher than those experienced yesterday.

Felipe Massa returned to his garage mid-way through practice after bumping heavily across the kerbs. The Brazilian and team-mate Nick Heidfeld both crashed during Friday practice, forcing their mechanics to work hard overnight to ensure that their cars were ready for today’s action. Massa was 4th fastest this morning, three places ahead of Heidfeld.

Juan Pablo Montoya improved slightly on his practice performance yesterday, finishing this morning’s session 11th, but the Colombian is still struggling to get to grips with the Hungaroring.

Yet again Anthony Davidson was the busiest man on track compelting 18 laps, and the Englishman finished the session bottom of the listings, just behind team-mate Mark Webber.

Giancarlo Fisichella continued the competitive form he has demonstrated so far this weekend by posting the 5th fastest time, while Takuma Sato was 15th.

Jenson Button’s practice session ended in disaster after he lost the front wing of his Renault during an accident in the closing minutes. The Englishman was 9th fastest, three places ahead of jarno Trulli.

McLaren duo Coulthard and Raikkonen were off the pace this morning, ending up 6th and 10th with the Finnish driver ahead of his Scottish team-mate.
