Mexico City Grand Prix Preview - Mercedes

Toto Wolff: Austin demonstrated the potential we have with our latest update, but it also highlighted where we still have work to do.

We have added performance, but accessing it consistently is proving more challenging. George suffered particularly with that last weekend and, as a team, our focus is on understanding why and helping get the car into a better window.

The championships are moving closer, but our mindset does not change. Thinking about the outcome won't help us achieve it. We will stay disciplined, take each session as it comes, and concentrate on doing the fundamentals well. That includes Fred, who will take over George's car for FP1. He is an important member of our team and we know we can rely on him to deliver precise, useful feedback as we work through Friday's programme.

Third Driver Insight with Frederik Vesti

I'm really excited to be back in the car once again for FP1 in Mexico. It's always a great opportunity to get more time behind the wheel, continue learning and, most importantly, help the team with its work across the weekend.

Mexico City is a unique challenge from an engineering perspective. The high altitude means the air is much thinner, which has a huge impact on how the car performs. You lose downforce and grip, while at the same time reaching some of the highest speeds of the year. It's often described as running Monaco-level downforce while seeing Monza-like straight-line speeds, which creates a fascinating challenge for both the drivers and engineers.

The circuit itself demands a real compromise in setup. There are several slow, tight corners where you need a strong front end and good balance, but the middle sector features fast, flowing sections where carrying speed and generating maximum grip is critical. Finding the right balance between those different requirements is key to having a competitive weekend.

Having driven in FP1 here on multiple occasions, it's a circuit that's close to my heart. I always enjoy coming back to Mexico. The fans create an incredible atmosphere, the city is fantastic, and the racing is usually very exciting. Tyre degradation can be high, strategy often plays an important role, and there's normally plenty of action throughout the race. It's a challenging but rewarding event, and I'm really looking forward to being back there again.

• The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits at over 2,200 metres above sea level, making it the highest venue on the F1 calendar and creating unique challenges for cooling, aerodynamics and power unit performance.

• This track is the third-shortest circuit on the 2026 F1 calendar, at just 4.304 km (behind only Zandvoort and Monaco).

• The track has the longest run from pole position to the first braking zone of any on the 2026 F1 calendar (815m).

• The team has three wins at the track - two with Lewis ('16 and '19) and one with Nico ('15). The latter win came on F1's return to the track for the first time since 1992.

• This year's Grand Prix coincides with Día de Muertos, one of Mexico's most significant cultural celebrations, when families honour and celebrate loved ones who have died. With festivities taking place across Mexico City throughout the weekend, it will add another distinctive element to the atmosphere surrounding the race.
