Despite the MCL40 performing as the fastest car at the Madring since Saturday's final lap of the closing Qualifying round, circumstances outside of the team's control ultimately denied Lando Norris the opportunity to fight for victory at the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix.

After a confident battle through the opening corners, Lando easily controlled the first phase of the race, managing his pace at the front while pulling clear of Andrea Kimi Antonelli to build an advantage of more than six seconds.

Paradoxically, the defending World Champion became a victim of that advantage as moments after the race leader had passed the pit lane entry, a Virtual Safety Car was triggered with Aston Martin's Lance Stroll stopping on track. This meant that the following cars of Antonelli, Max Verstappen and George Russell were able to pit immediately, while Lando had to wait until the following lap. By the time Car Number 1 had entered the pit lane, the race had returned to green-flag conditions. As a result, Lando rejoined behind both Mercedes cars and Verstappen alongside Charles Leclerc who hadn't pitted at all. Although Lando experienced a slower stop onto Hard tyres, which remains an area for the team to review, it was the timing of the Virtual Safety Car, not the time spent in the pit box, that cost him today's race victory.

Despite this frustrating knockback, Lando quickly began rebuilding his race, moving into fourth when Russell pitted for a second time onto Hard tyres. He continued to close the gap to the cars ahead and climbed to third after Leclerc made his only stop of the race.

In the closing phase, Lando reeled in Verstappen but was unable to create an opportunity to attack around the complex Madring circuit. Having demonstrated that the MCL40 possessed the pace to win, he ultimately crossed the line third after factors outside his control overturned the advantage he had built at the front.

Starting seventh on the Hard tyre, Oscar's race was compromised on the opening lap when contact with Russell damaged his front wing and spoiled the balance of his car for the remainder of the Grand Prix. The Australian continued on track but became caught in traffic on a circuit where overtaking proved difficult, limiting his opportunities to make progress through the midfield.

The timing of the Virtual Safety Car also worked against those who had started on the Hard compound, and Oscar remained out until Lap 42 before switching to Medium tyres. With the new set not delivering the performance he had hoped for and traffic continuing to restrict his progress, Oscar brought the car home in eighth to secure four points for the team.

Today's result gives McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team another Podium and double points finish on a weekend where race victory was possible. Although the outcome does not fully reflect the opportunity created by Lando's Pole position and early lead, the team will take the disappointment on the chin and leave Madrid encouraged by the MCL40's performance. The single-lap speed shown in Qualifying, combined with the strong race pace demonstrated this afternoon, provides a positive foundation to carry into the next few Grands Prix. With further upgrades expected over the coming races, the team will look to build on that competitiveness and convert its pace into stronger results.

Before the team go to Azerbaijan, Lando Norris will head to Portimão to test the MCL-HY at the Algarve International Circuit. The British driver, who first got behind the wheel of the McLaren Hypercar project's car at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, will put the LMDh car through its paces on the Portuguese track.

Lando Norris: "I feel like I drove a perfect race today, my tyre management was very strong, and I felt a step ahead of everyone. Qualifying was perfect, the race in terms of performance was perfect, and we were quickest by a big margin. It's just incredibly frustrating to lose in a way that has nothing to do with performance. I was the only driver on the whole grid who didn't get a pit stop under the VSC, and I lost around twenty seconds of race time because of it.

"There are still positives to take from this weekend in terms of what we can do. The pace on Sunday is clearly there, we were better than everyone today, and that's reassuring. Saturday is still an area we need to improve, but if we can close that gap and avoid situations like today, we win. We'll take today on the chin, keep pushing, and go again."

Oscar Piastri: "It was a tough one for us today, and a pretty painful race from start to finish. I got squeezed by Russell which then broke my front wing on the first lap, and from there we just got stuck in traffic, which is tricky with the lack of overtaking here. Unfortunately, the VSC timing wasn't ideal for the Hard tyre starters like myself. When we did pit, the Mediums didn't perform how we wanted them to, and I was back in traffic.

"The positive we can take is that there are some good learnings, especially on how to get the most out of the car. We also had some decent pace on the Hard tyre in clean air, which is always encouraging. We will review, see what more we can learn and then and take it into the next part of the season."

Andrea Stella: "Today is a day of mixed emotions, but we leave with our heads held high and a smile on our faces. Lando was the fastest driver on track and absolutely deserved the victory. The pace we showed was phenomenal, especially at a circuit where we didn't expect to be so strong. Unfortunately, factors entirely outside our control, specifically the timing of the Virtual Safety Car, meant the win was taken from us. We reviewed all options, but the circumstances left us with no viable alternative strategy. It's frustrating when you have the performance to win and the racing gods aren't on your side, but we will take it on the chin.

"The biggest positive is the clear evidence that our car is competitive and capable of fighting at the front. The team did an exceptional job all weekend to unlock this level of performance, and it gives us great confidence for the upcoming races. We are closing the gap in the championship and have proven we can be a threat on Sundays. While it was a tougher day for Oscar, who was compromised by damage at the start, we are working hard with him to unlock his full potential. We look forward to Baku, ready to fight for podiums and victories."
