Perez drops sponsor over Trump tweet

NEWS STORY
10/11/2016

Sergio Perez has dropped his personal sponsor, the sunglasses manufacturer Hawkers, after a controversial tweet it made following Donald Trump's US election victory.

The Force India driver was outraged when Hawkers tweeted that Mexican citizens might use its sunglasses in order not to show their "crying eyes tomorrow when you are building the wall" a reference to comments made by Donald Trump during what was one of the most bitter election battles of recent times.

"Really bad comment," responded Perez via Twitter. "Today I am breaking my relationship with @HawkersMX. I will never let anyone make fun of my country."

The sponsorship deal is just weeks old, and while the comment was tongue in cheek, albeit in poor taste, to add to the embarrassment the company's Twitter page still features the partnership with Perez in its banner.

"We have made a grave mistake, it will not happen again" the company Tweeted, after being bombarded with hostile responses.

"I remember when drivers were men. So sorry to see that Perez suffers from infantilism. Nobody really cares about his tantrums. And I doubt the sponsor is losing sleep over this. I am guessing they'll be calling Perez's attorney about breaking the contract, or worse."

"It's nice to see this works in reverse sometimes. I would think it's almost always the sponsor dropping the competitor, not the other way around."
