Kubica set for Renault Sport Trophy debut

Grand Prix winner Robert Kubica is to make his debut in the Renault Sport Trophy at Spa-Francorchamps.

The Polish driver will be behind the wheel of a Renault Sport R.S. 01 for round five of the 2016 Renault Sport Trophy at Spa-Francorchamps alongside Christophe Hamon for the Duqueine Engineering team.

The first champion in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series, Kubica subsequently took part in the end of season F1 test which was to lead to a seat with the BMW F1 team in 2006.

A Grand Prix winner with BMW in 2008, Kubica returned to Renault in 2010, finishing 8th in the championship.

Sadly, a pre-season accident during a rally in Italy was to end his F1 career, though he subsequently made a successful return to rallying.

After winning the 2013 WRC-2 Championship, the Pole made his return to circuit racing in a Mercedes in this year's 12 Hours of Mugello, and has now accepted the invitation of Renault Sport Trophy to race in Spa.

To get comfortable with the car Kubica and the Duqueine Engineering team joined up this week at the Ales circuit in the South of France for a shakedown.

"I quickly felt at ease at the wheel of the R.S. 01," said Kubica, "and even on a twisty track like Ales its qualities were immediately evident, especially the stopping power granted by the carbon discs. I was impressed by how late into the corner you can brake and by the absence of body roll, even when you push to make the most of the available grip. I look forward to driving it at Spa, where all the downforce the car can generate will also come into play."
