No Grand Prix but U.S. could get an F1 team

NEWS STORY
04/02/2009

With just a few real stories providing interest ahead of the next test - mainly the FIA's proposal for further dramatic cost custs - it is understandable that eveyone is willing to jump on any news item that might stimulate further interest in the sport.

Consequently, there is much excitement today following reports in the German media that the United States could have an F1 team as early as 2010.

Thus far, little is known about the project other than it has a logo (above) and a website.

It is known that Ken Anderson, formerly Technical Director with Ligier and who also spent time with Onyx, is involved, while it is also claimed that former Williams Team Manager turned jounalist and commentator Peter Windsor is involved.

In recent years there has been much talk of an American team entering F1, with Dan Gurney reported to be working on such a project a couple of years ago.

The Anderson connection gives the story a little more credence, for other than his F1 work, he also has experience in ChampCars and NASCAR, and is even part owner of the Wind Shear wind tunnel in North Carolina which has been in recent times by F1 and NASCAR teams.

It is claimed the project has the 'blessing' of Bernie Ecclestone which is surprising because many Americans are firmly of the opinion that he know longer possesses a map which features either the United Statres or Canada.

At a time when Honda is still seeking a buyer and there are question marks over a number of other teams, it might seem strange that a new outfit might be considering entering the sport. However, the rules already in place combined with the further cost cutting proposals from the FIA revealed this morning might just stem the flow.

We shall await further news from USF1 with interest.
