Spa revamp gets underway

NEWS STORY
14/11/2006

Work on the modification of the Spa Francorchamps circuit has now begun.

Although originally included in the 2006 schedule, the race was dropped following the financial collapse of race promoter Didier Defourny's company, DDGP, though some insist the race was already in doubt due to the redevelopment work that needed to be carried out to the pit and paddock area to Bernie Ecclestone's satisfaction.

The reconstruction work, which should be completed by mid-May, will see the entire pit and paddock complex re-built and expanded. This will necessitate changes to the Bus Stop Chicane, which will now become a right-left chicane.

The revamp included new grandstands on the start/finish straight. Eau Rouge and La Source, in addition to new public entrances to the circuit.

However, the regional government, which is keen to see Spa back on the calendar, still needs to sort out a number of planning issues, mainly regarding parking areas.
