Singapore looking to join F1 calendar?

NEWS STORY
11/04/2005

According to reports, Singapore is the latest country eager to get on to the Formula One World Championship Calendar.

The country's Electric New Paper reports that a 'motorsport' event will be held in August this year in order to 'test the water', and see if their would be the demand/support for an F1 race.

Currently, organizers are looking at the possibility of a street circuit, though the construction of a purpose built track has not been ruled out.

Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA) president Matthew Lee has said that it would cost Singapore around $12m-$15m (US) annually to host a race. The Singapore Tourism Board, however, will not comment on the story.

Although the organizers are hoping to follow Melbourne's example and run the race on what are predominantly public roads, Mr Lee says that the construction of a purpose built track is a possibility, most likely in conjunction with a planned sports and casino complex in Marina Bay.
