Coulthard coy over Red Bull chances

NEWS STORY

Following what appears to be a complete change of heart by Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz - or should that be called manipulation of the media - where the Austrian (in one week) has gone from saying that his team is not interested in former McLaren star David Coulthard, to admitting that the Scot is high on the team's 'wants' list, the man himself, DC, is keeping tight-lipped.

"I can't say today I will drive for Red Bull Racing, but maybe in a few days I can say that," said the Scot, according to the BBC.

"Their position is that they are the team that's most likely because of the availability they have and the position they are in," he added, referring to the fact that despite strong rumours linking both Christian Klien and F3000 champion Vitantonio Liuzzi with the vacant seat, no deals have been done.

It's felt that now the euphoria of having actually bought an F1 team, after years of trying, Mateschitz is finally beginning to realize what it involves and think with his head rather than his heart. A few years back the Austrian fell out (and how!) with Peter Sauber, over the Swiss team owner's decision to sign a certain young Finn, Kimi Raikkonen, in preference to Enrique Bernoldi.

Although Mateschitz might fancy a young line-up comprising Klien and Liuzzi, Coulthard would bring a wealth of much needed experience to the Milton Keynes based outfit.

"We're exploring all opportunities," admitted Coulthard's manager, former racer turned commentator, Martin Brundle, earlier this week. "And Red Bull Racing would unquestionably be one of them."

The team is having a Christmas lunch in just over a week's time, perhaps DC will be there.
