Antonelli penalised

NEWS STORY
08/11/2026

Kimi Antonelli has been handed a 5s penalty for an unsafe release.

The Sao Paulo stewards determined that the 2026 world champion was released in an unsafe manner when Franco Colapinto was approaching in the fast lane.

While Antonelli was entitled to travel down the pit lane in parallel to cars in the fast lane, in this instance, he momentarily lost control on the slippery surface and had to take steps to avoid a collision and that resulted in a potentially unsafe situation.

Mercedes acknowledged that this release could have been handled better and in a safer manner. Consequently, the stewards imposed a 5 second time penalty, though this did not impact the Italian's finishing position.
